Breaking the Reading Code I Consonant Rules Embedded in Language Experience Stories
Joan S. Kissel

The 59 one page stories in BRC I help sudents break the reading code with an emphasis on consonant rules including phonemic awareness, syllable rules, consonant-consonant rules, vowel-consonant rules, reduplicated consonant rules, rules f or the letters c and g, rules for multiple letters making one sound, rules for one sound with multiple letters, and rules for one sound made with different letters.

Each of the 59 stories in the six sections consists of a Picture Page, Teacher/Parent Page, Rebus Page and Reading Page. The teacher reads the story while the students look at pictures from the story. The teacher then asks questions about the story. The students then read the rebus page. Non -readers learn to read the pictures, while beginning readers read the words and pictures. Consonant rules are learned from redundancy! Redundancy! Redundancy!

BRC I Consonant Rules has one data sheet and 238 work sheets. The data sheet and each work sheet include the purpose of the lesson, skills the lesson is designed to teach, and directions for use. BRC I is appropriate for delayed or disordered language, autistic, hearing- impaired or ESOL students.
