OWLS Listening Comprehension Scale (LCS), Oral Expression Scale (OES) and Written Expression Scale

OWLS is an individually administered assessment of receptive and expressive language for children and young adults ages 3 to 21. The scales include: Listening Comprehension Scale (LCS), Oral Expression Scale (OES), and Written Expression Scale. The LCS portion is administered in 5 to 15 minutes. The OES portion takes approximately 10-25 minutes. While the Written Expression Scale takes 15 to 25 minutes and may be administered individually or in small groups.

The LCS is a measure of receptive language. Using a convenient easel, the examiner reads a verbal stimulus aloud. The examinee responds by indicating a picture on the examinee’s side of the easel. On the OES the examinee either answers a question, completes a sentence, or generates one or more sentences in response to a visual/verbal stimulus. The Written Expression Scale measures important writing skills including: use of conventions; handwriting, spelling, punctuation, use of syntactical forms; modifiers, phrases, sentence structures, ability to communicate meaningfully using relevance, cohesiveness, and organization.

OWLS’ three scales are standardized on a nationwide sample of 1,795. The sample was stratified to match the 1991 Current Population Survey (CPS) figures on sex, race/ethnicity, region, and mother’s education level. Age-based norms can be used in learning disabilities assessments to meet requirements of P.L. 94-142 (IDEA, P.L. 101-476). Raw scores can be converted to standard scores (M=100, SD=15), percentile ranks, normal curve equivalents, stanines, and test-age equivalents.

The Written Expression Scale correlates .84 -.88 with the global scores on achievement batteries (K-TEA, PIAT-R, and WRMT-R); .57 and .62 with measures of receptive language, (OWLS Listening Comprehension Scale and PPVT-R); .66 with the OWLS Oral Expression Scale; and .72 and .67 with measures of Verbal Intelligence (WISC-III VIQ and K-BIT Vocabulary). Score profiles of seven clinical groups include: speech impaired, language delayed, language impaired, mentally handicapped, reading disabled, general learning disabled, and hearing impaired.

OWLS-1 complete kit includes: Listening Comprehension and Oral expression Manual; Listening Comprehension Easel; Oral Expression Record Forms; Written Expression Manual; 25 written Expression Response Booklets; 25 Written Expression Record Forms; 1 written Expression Administration Card
