Here is a nonthreatening way to uncover and treat psychological problems in children. The Talking, Feeling, and Doing Game is especially useful with those who are inhibited or uncooperative in therapy.

Players respond to questions on game cards, receiving reward chips for relevant answers. (In this revised edition of the game, 25% of the question cards have been updated, modified, or improved.) The child's responses generally reveal psychological issues that are most pressing at the time. When it is the therapist's turn to respond to a card, he or she can formulate an answer that addresses the child's needs and concerns. Because the therapist and the child communicate indirectly, through the game cards, they are often able to discuss sensitive issues that the child is unwilling or unable to bring up independently.

The game can be played by the therapist and one to four children, in 30 to 45 minutes. Game leaders should have a masters degree in psychology, social work, or counseling. Ages 4 to 15.
