This widely used 2- to 3-minute screening test identifies children most in need of speech therapy. It provides an objective articulation loss score, a standardized language loss score, and a language function score. The three subtests – Language Proficiency and Intelligibility, Articulation Function, and Language Function – provide an effective screening device for measuring phonemic similarity, stimulability, number of defective sounds, error consistency, frequency of occurrence, and developmental expectancy.

The RALT is a useful test for the speech/language pathologist who wishes to determine quickly which children are in need of further testing. Standardized on kindergarten, first – and second – grade boys and girls from low and middle socioeconomic levels, this test is easy to administer, score, and interpret. It is a valuable tool for fulfilling requirements of P.L. 94 – 142.
